The 19th annual Shop with a Cop event in Milwaukee brought together 50 police officers and deputies from various local agencies to pair up with children for holiday shopping at Third Street Market Hall on Saturday, each child receiving a $200 Kohl’s gift card.
Young shoppers eagerly selected presents for their loved ones, with one AnnaMarie Gonzales saying, “I got these cars that, like, drive by their self with a remote for my little brother’s. I got a Minnie Mouse toy.” Another participant shared, “For my dad, a hoodie, my mom, a blender, and I do not know for my brother, maybe a shaving kit.”
The event aims to create lasting connections between youth and law enforcement. “I’m not sure how they do the matching and pairing, but it’s so crazy how we was able to connect and just vibe with one another today,” Detective Janay Patterson with Milwaukee police said.
Organizers emphasized the program’s impact, noting that it provides an unforgettable experience for children and helps build relationships. “The amazing thing is, some of these police officers bond with the children so much that they exchange phone numbers. They go to visit them for birthdays and holidays. They’re able to take them to different events, so it ends up building a relationship and a long-standing partnership,” said Catherin Trimboli, an organizer.
One deputy from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said, “I love it. Kids smile and, ’round this time of the year, a lot of kids aren’t too fortunate,” Deputy Shonda Campbell said, highlighting the joy the event brings to children during the holiday season.
